Google Plus vs Facebook – An Overview

Google has again entered into the social networking game with new strategies. Google’s new social networking platform Google plus has been released as an “Invite only” release and this is a popular marketing technique nowadays to intensify the users’ urge to join while doing the beta testing with a limited number of users. I got an invite and explored it for a while and all I can say is Google+ is really cool. However, at this stage it’s very hard to predict if the Google plus vs Facebook competition will make sense. Because, social networking is a market that closely works on peoples’ psychology giving them a virtual world with an environment that they want. Google already has its social network Orkut, which has almost been ignored by many and it does not have any potential to grow. It’s still bit popular in India and a few other countries and it speaks all about it. Forget Orkut, even google has forgotten it now.

Google plus vs facebook

Facebook is the most successful social network in the internet history, unlike the other social networks facebook’s growth is solid and it keeps the platform changing frequently so as to give the people something new and keeping them busy with them so that they will not feel bored and think of going outside facebook (not for all but for the majority it works). Moreover facebook started challenging the other Internet giants who are/were not at all into the social networking business. Though google is still the largest Internet company, it has been affected a lot by the growth of facebook. How? Because google’s main income is coming from advertising (Google Ads) and after facebook started its advertising game (Facebook Ads) the advertisers have got another choice and the growth of facebook grabbed some advertising areas from google since the social network allows some kind of unique demographic targeting that a search engine or content network can’t provide. Still Google is bigger than facebook and the advertising market google has is much larger than Facebook but things can change in future.

Why google wants to get into the social networking business?

Search engines can’t expand their user-base in a bigger way like social networking platforms.  If a person wants to search something on the Internet he will use google – that’s all (forget other search engines since they are too small compared to google). But the social network, on the other hand has a highly expanding user-base. Social networks drag the people into the virtual world and do the necessary things to keep them inside that virtual world for a long possible time while making them drag some other people too into this virtual world. The more a user spends his time on facebook the greater the money facebook makes. Today facebook has set many new standards to social networking and now facebook’s standards have become as the current definitions of social networking. Thus, google can not go away from the current social networking standards and eventually the Google+ looks like a facebook clone. However, one of the nature of the business world is “Copying from other successful businesses”. Facebook copied some core concepts of twitter too in their later releases and those features helped facebook to expand its boundaries even more. Due to these issues I don’t see the copying some features of facebook and any other social networks is not going to make google looks bad. It is just business and as a user what I only want is a social networking platform that gives me the environment I want. Still I don’t want to bring joindiaspora here as it has not proved itself in the real market yet, though some features of google+ reminds the joindiaspora (still it’s a beta) too.

The best way to describe an unknown is comparing it with a well known, let me compare Google+ and Facebook!

Google plus vs Facebook – My thoughts :

The pluses of Google+ over Facebook

  1. Google+ provides better privacy and well layered grouping – Circles
  2. Google+ does not have annoying applications like facebook (may be yet)
  3. Google+ combines facebook and twitter together when the main features are concerned
  4. Google+ is simple and sweet – May be just because it is new
  5. Google+ uses the google chat for chatting. It is much better than facebook chat
  6. Google hangout is far better than the Facebook video chat

The minuses of Google+ over Facebook

  1. Google+ lacks some features that facebook has (Since it’s new and beta)
  2. Google+ does not have anything special for a typical facebook freak who does not care much about privacy
  3. Google+ does not have an own powerful branding as a social network (It’s a sub-product of google and not a mere social network brand like “facebook”) However, this is how it could be released because a unique branding is too weeker to compete facebook

    google plus > facebook

    • shellie says:

In view of all the recent changes FB has made…in the beginning FB was simple and this was the draw bringing users from myspace. With the lack of privacy and the lack of choice over complicated streams, lists, top stories, and having to subscribe to friends pages to view their streams. There is alot of confusion and difficulty using facebook now. I think users will look and move to another social networking site like what happened in myspace a few years back. Users want something easy to utilize. Google plus provides both the simplicity and privacy that users desire.

  2. Anon says:

Another Buzz attempt. Facebook is just too big to compete with, its ecosystem has penetrated everything. The only one most valuable feature that Google+ does have is circles aka groups other than that, most people wouldn’t care. But I bet you Facebook will match that feature in matter of months.

    • SG says:

What “Anon” (who said “Another Buzz attempt”) totally overlooks is that part of Google+ is Buzz. It’s not ANOTHER Buzz (meant to imply “a failure”). Google+ incorporates Buzz, Chat, video and various other pieces. Google+ is not just another piece! If that’s what you think, you are totally clueless about what is going on.

In some things, the whole is more than the sum of the parts. Buzz and the other small offerngs that Google has been providing over time are merely parts of what is now a bigger project. So you would essentially be clueless to the power of emergence if you were to write off Google+ so quickly.

Make no mistake: This is not another Buzz. This is a big deal. It marks a fundamental shift in how Google provides ALL of its offerings to its users. It’s hard to explain how clueless Anon’s commentary is.

      • Jacob says:

Respectfully agree with the above ^

        • kat says:

I love your google and others hire bloggers to write comments promoting their stuff. :)

          • Pol says:

Those who do not open their mind to impartially try to understand and anticipate what is happening right now, will just stay on the beach, under FB’s palm-trees, looking their friends leaving on a giant cruise-ship going to places they cannot even imagine…and there is nothing wrong with that…It’s just a matter of choice.

      • Kashif Baig says:

Definately google will beat as it did in all products (almost)

there is no compitetion of google in the world of internet.

        facebook is a kid

  3. GG says:

With the size of facebook, and keeping in mind how the average user’s brains work, I highly doubt that google plus would surpass or even be able to compete with facebook. People are afraid of new things, especially not if they don’t have anything new to offer. Why move over to a new social networking system where barely any of your friends are when you have facebook which looks friendly and known, with many of your friends over there, and many supporting apps.

    • Karl says:

You cannot just take size alone as a consideration. Remember the site you called mySpace? How was it then compared to Facebook when it entered the market. mySpace was basically an institution. But a less known, less funded, but more creative Facebook was able to wipe it off the stage. Just imagine an equally creative and innovative site, with more funding, and produced by a global IT giant in the form of Google Plus (G+).

If Facebook was able to beat mySpace in its past condition, you cannot rule out the possibility of G+ beating facebook since it has more to bank on than facebook did when it entered the market.

      • John says:

That makes sense, that if facebook was able to wipe out myspace completely, then it’s reasonable to assume that google could wipe out facebook too, assuming they have more features that would be relevant to the average user. But, GG made a good point about familiarity. ever notice when facebook makes even the most minor changes to it’s features or even layout, everyone flips their shit! your news feed is plagued by people being like “OMG I hate the new facebook layout! anyone know of a hack to get the old layout back??!!” or more recently “OMGGG HOW DO I USE THE NEW FACEBOOK CHAT??? where are my friends??”

I think that facebook has penetrated the world soo much more than myspace ever did, and they’re going to be hard to beat.

      • taishikan says:

Great take! i totally agree. there’s no doubt about what u have mention.but the question now is, if G+ can overtake FB as FB have overtake MySpace/Friendster, how long will it take for G+ plus to swipe away FB..?

again, i really agree with u

      • Ryan says:

I like what you said Karl. Google has way more to offer than Facebook. I would love to see Facebook kicked to the curb. I’m tired of all of their changes without notifying or giving their users a choice, I hate the games they play when changing your settings, and if people think that their data is safe they better think again.

    • Devils-advocate says:

‘Export setting’, OH! well…that takes care of the ‘lack of friends’ problem, aye? not to mention the 150 beta invites (before its even released).
The rest is all justified by its ‘field trial’. THAT means that its open to change.
No need to hate just because you didnt get ‘THE invite’ :p
Ps. People might despise change but a PERSON welcomes it. (see what I did there?)

  4. danny says:

“changing frequently so as to give the people something new and keeping them busy with them so that they will not feel bored and think of going outside facebook” even though the changes suck and that’s really why everyone left? Google + looks nice but I don’t care for social networking at all. Yeah it looks nice and simple, but so did FB when it first came out, as did Myspace. As did the internet. Then everything became so bogged down with spam/advertisements and flash embeds. Look what happened.

  5. funnyMan says:

Looks 100 times better than facebook!! and come on, google is much more trusted than the facebook which became famous over night…

  6. Phil says:

    1. Privacy and Grouping Friends- You can customize your privacy settings on facebook from letting anyone and everyone see and read everythiong about you, to completely cuttingyourself off from the rest of the network. You can also create groups or circles for all your friends. For example, I have all my old college friends grouped together.

    2. Apps- So Google + has no apps yet. Big freaking deal. That just means the only thing to do on there is read about your aunts last bowel movement. Facebook gives the option of hiding all app related posts, which is good because I’d probiably kill some of my friends considering how many times they play and post from Farmville.

    3. Combining Facebook and Twitter- Soooooo status updates? Wow, now there’s a unique idea for the world of social networking. Again, i refer youto Aunt Ida’s most recent post about her colon.

    4. Simple and sweet- And boring. No design quality whatsoever. Nothing but complete and utter white space. For now.

    5. Chat- So much better because it’s like you’re instant messaging… Oh wait, there’s virtually no difference whatsoever, except perhaps the design…but we already talked about that.

Really, Google+ has nothing to entice me with because, let’s be honest, it just plain doesn’t have anything. It’s coming about 6 years late to the party. As for the supposed “exclusivity” of being on Google+, just remember that facebook started out as the most exclusive social network of all and to register you not only had to be invited, but you had to have an @harvard.edu at the end of your email address. You don’t really get much more exclusive than that, and look where it has come. Remember, Google is doing this for money. Facebook cut a huge chunk out of their advertisement profits which they’re trying to win back. Do you really think they’ll want to stay super exclusive, or will thye try to make as much money as possible from it? Between Twitter and Facebook, the social networking market is pretty tightly cornered. The only reason for even having Twitter is to keep the absurdly-frequent-status-updaters off of Facebook. So really, can you honestly say thiat Google+ stands a real chance of succeeding?

    • Devils-advocate says:

DUDE! google i already worth WAY more than facebook alone. I think that they have the ability to hold off monetizing googleplus until its really incorporated in peoples homes. and if I recall, thats exactly what Facebook did too (not monetizing until the right moment). So here, google has the higher ground.
As for your points, youre more confusing than Lost (which ever episode).
Everything is still in Beta stage (kinda why they didnt rush to release it, there is SO much undiscovered potential).

Member base? yeah, well pretty much EVERYONE with a google account. Very few will want to be out of the hype.

All in all, googleplus has the advantage of background.

    • Anon says:

The way you use facebook requires a lot of tinkering with settings. And don’t you think you’re getting too defendant of facebook? This is the internet we’re talking about. It’s volatile and ever-changing. Remember Yahoo! and AOL? They used to be the most popular websites with nearly complete monopoly over, well, everything. Now, they’re just barely squeezing themselves in the market.

Facebook has made a lot of marketing slip-ups recently which you can’t deny, even if you are a facebook-fanboy. Their updates were too common: they changed too much without bothering to test and polish. Remember the flurry of complaints that occurred everytime there was a new update? Well, that’s because the change came too quickly and was too hastily made. And now, its just pitiful. They never made an efficient way to make money so now they’re just piling ads that aren’t even checked for format-fitting.

Also, all the white space is actually a design element called negative space. Ooh, and the chat system has much cleaner and more efficient coding. Which means less of the infamous facebook chat crashes. You shouldn’t talk trash if you have no idea what you’re talking about. You sound like an ignorant idiot. But I must say, your response was one of the most entertaining examples of fanboydom I have ever read.

      • Lornek says:

«…one of the most entertaining examples of fanboydom I have ever read.»
        I must agree with that.

Although I don’t really like social networks and think they’re nothing but a waste of time, I’d go for Google Plus if I was willing to join one, its video chat seems to be far better then Facebook’s.

  7. sharon says:

google plus is definately better than facebook.google is more trusted and more popular than facebook.i’m sick of seeing statuses from people on facebook that i don’t necessarily like or talk to,ive already got alot of people blocked from my news feed but theres always going to those few people that piss you off with their stupid statuses.google plus lets you choose which people you actually want to see statuses about and actually want to talk to.ive got google plus and its so much better than facebook by far

  8. mick says:

Facebook is cleaver and ground breaking there’s no dount, but at the same time it has a lot of annoying featues and questionable privacy features and default settings. This annoys a lot of people, myself included and if FB only react when a good competitor comes along then that makes me disclike FB even more. I will certainly give Google+ a go and I will encourage as many people as possible to try it too. If it fails to grab our attention then we can always return to the necessary evil.

    • AmazedHuman says:

If you think FaceBook’s privacy settings are questionable now…wait a few minutes. They’re fixing it so that EVERYTHING you read, watch, listen to is going to be shared with everyone. Are you comfortable with that? Not this cowgirl. I’m about out of FaceBook because of the coming changes. I’m thinking a whole lot of other people will be too.

  9. Saif says:

The main reason why Google leads Facebook is that Google is well established and Facebook is still a minnow. Even if Google+ fails, Google won’t incur huge losses because it will cover all its monetary issues with other services like Adwords, Adsense etc. Facebook is just a Social Networking Website and is at par with Orkut, Buzz and Google+ while on the other hand Google is ‘Giant’. It can swallow Facebook as a whole just as Facebook did to other small social networking websites i.e. Myspace and Friendster with one successful launch or either ways. So, just wait and watch. This is the war of a Crocodile and a Frog ;)

  10. Louisa says:

I, personally, love the look of Google+. It looks simple and clean, none of Facebook’s fussiness. And because it’s Google, I assume that it’s going to be easy to use.
@Phil, Google+ is only private at the moment because they are still testing it, it’s going to be open to everyone when they’ve finished it.
And that, for me, is the reason that as soon as it is available I will be joining. By testing it on a group of people the developers are showing us that they will listen to our suggestions. Unlike the Facebook developers who ignore the common complaints and decide to update the few things that users are happy with. In my opinion, Google have chosen a brilliant time to launch Google+. People are becomming frustrated with Facebook changing things that don’t need changing and ignoring all the real issues people have with the site, but until now, people have had no real alternative to Facebook. Twitter and Tumblr are too different, not as functional as Facebook, and MySpace and Bebo have been deemed to uncool. Google+ seems like the only real alternative to Facebook, and with the Circles and Hangout (video chat!) features, it seems clear to me that it is the better choice of the two.

  11. “Facebook is too big to compete with”

Idiot. Like Facebook is going to last forever or something … of course it will fall to something. I think that something will be Google+ … but even if it isn’t, it will be SOMETHING.

  12. theviruses says:

you know this is a step for google and its going to be interesting when google plus has fully completed itself. im really liking it so far and easy to use. the whole interface is pretty neat and fast even on the android app…keep going google

  13. Joshua says:

I don’t get the point of all this. We all know that Myspace is still the shiz-nit. I mean, what other networking site gives you glitter unicorns and Tom as an instant friend? (sarcasm)

  14. Brit says:

I think that facebook will slowly fade out as people move over to google+. The same thing happened with myspace. At one point I had both a myspace and facebook account and then, as more and more people started joining facebook, I slowly stopped checking myspace. Probably the same thing will happen here (and if not with google+ with something. Facebook is not immortal).

  15. Terry says:

I agree with Brit. I actually liked MySpace better than FaceBook.(Brit did not say that he liked MySpace better. That is my opinion.) But For what ever reason the masses went to FaceB. So I actually had no choice but to follow. SO! Google Plus? I Guess we will wait & See! In the Internet World. There is no guarantee you are going to stay on top. You come up with a new noval idea! Then someone, or one of the Big boys figures out how to notch you & make it better!!! Millions of people to convince that you are the bigger, better, best innovation, since sliced Bread. But, People are fickle, & get used to using a certain program. Yet! Somehow FaceBook took Myspace users away? Go figure! I guess we will wait & see!!

    • Pete says:

But Terry … FB took the MySpace users away because my space overdid the advertising and we all got fed up with it. What irony …. all those Ads were a part of a $900M deal that Google did with MySpace when they saw the networking site as an ad channel opportunity!!!

Why not call it “Orkut Plus” … oh yes, that’s right Google’s social networking site that has been running since 2004 really only has a handful of users outside of Brazil and India.

You can guarantee that FB will be looking at the good things (Circles) in G+ and bringing out their updates very soon

  16. Matt Morgan says:

Zuckherburg joined Google+ and has more friends on it then the owner himself

  17. Morghan says:

I think they have a real opportunity with Android users as the FaceBook for Android app is still vastly inferior to the iPhone and even the BlackBerry one. If Google manages to make Google+ work on Android they’ll have picked up a good chunk of people who are sick of the horrible notifications and rather unwieldy user interface of FaceBook on that platform.

And in relation to above comments…

I switched to FaceBook to get away from the annoying MySpace apps and overly customized profiles that took forever to load and invariably hurt either my eyes or ears. Now FB is getting worse at that and I’ve been hoping for a new option that would allow me to connect to friends and family without the constant annoyances that were integral to MySpace and now FaceBook as well.

    • Luke says:

But the android system is shit who cares if Google + works better on there then face book dose.

      • Lee says:

I really don’t agree with that, I know many people who prefer the Android platform, myself included. I too have been looking for an alternative to Facebook for some time and have been frustrated with the lack of a decent Facebook app on Android. Google+ is everything I have been asking for along with an app that works wonders on Android. My friends and I are exactly the user group Morghan was talking about.

  18. Tara says:

I agree with your whole thought on this Morghan. I got away from facebook too. Though I love the privacy settings taylored to each specific person in almost every way possible including friends that you had and didn’t want to unfriend.
I am an avid Android user and really hate the facebook UI. Google does stand a better chance

  19. Aryan says:

Remember things always changing! .. Google Plus may be similar as facebook for now But in future if they got little success as they expect then it will add lots of new features which is even never thought by anyone else now! .. These new features are expensive to develop but they are profitable.

Google Strategy = Build user base > Trust > Applications! to make money ..

Disadvantage of Facebook : Privacy , They are using more advanced methods to track their users (other than cookies and flash cookies)

  20. Heather says:

In my opinion, Facebook has taken the concepts of Orwell’s 1984 and brought them to reality. Do I really want every person I’m “networked” with to see my life through a magnifying glass? No. What I want to do is express myself and keep in touch. I’d much prefer to keep in contact with people the old fashioned way- telephone, letter, postcard. I have no choice in this day and age. Either I use Facebook to “connect” with (stalk) people I’ve lost touch with or I become a social recluse. I hope that Google+ takes Facebook down and leaves all of the unnecessary applications behind. I also hope that Google+ doesn’t have the same controlling qualities as facebook does. Who wants to spend hours attatched to their internet in an attempt to be “social” with people? Not me, I would rather be living socially in real life (as opposed to virtual/digital) and have the option to use a social networking site on my terms.

  21. Katie says:

I’ve been on G+ for just over a week and I already appreciate it more than I ever did with FB. That “boring” appearance is clean and simple and doesn’t require me to spend 14 hours a day on it just to keep in touch. Dividing family and friends and coworkers is great since now I can post to a circle that I’d like to head to the pub tonight and there won’t be the most random crowd of people. It’s organized and I see it as a social tool as opposed to a social life.

As for reading the boring stuff about my aunt’s bowels, how is FB not doing that? If I don’t spend money to play there games or post in their almost entirely inactive groups that were recklessly begun and abandoned in less than a week, I only have status updates and albums. G+ has that.

Also, I’ve noticed people are overlooking the ‘interests’ on G+. I love the little ‘Sparks’ option which has predefined things I can subscribe to as interests and clicking on them provides me news about that interest instead of millions of people who also share that interest and thirty dead groups of mostly the same name.

Google can advertise to me all they want. I respect they are a business and those ads allow me to have a stable email and a dozen other Internet tools that I use and love for free.

  22. Adam says:

Well lets look at it this way though. Facebook is currenty monopolizing this industry of networking in a since. Yes I Facebook myself, I have found alot of people that i hadnt talked to in years. but seeing that Google plus is out now. Everyone is on facebook because everyone knows about facebook. Not a whole lot of people know about google plus. the adverstisements havent hit like facebook has. every were you look almost everything can be followed on facebook. good god i am surprised that my crap doesnt have a facebook app. so good luck to google.

  23. TheZopher says:

Here’s how Google+ could overtake FB in a heartbeat and make everybody happy: Let’s see, FB has about 750,000,000 users. How much is FB worth? According to the most conservative estimates I can find somewhere between $30 and $100 per user. So, let Google use some if it’s cash horde…say give each new user $5 and another $5 for each “friend” a user signs up. i.e, it will cost about $10 per user. Google has well over $30 billion in cash. For $10 billion it could build a network of 1 billion users in no time. What would that be worth? Of course, maybe Apple, MSFT, and other cash-rich tech companies could try the same thing…now wouldn’t that be fun for us users?

  25. Cherrise Madden says:

    Sign Me Up!!!

  26. Alfredo says:

It’s simple as this: People get tired of stuff, they like changes, a bunch of people are sick of facebook, their privacy, fake accounts, clutter of information and apps, etc. Google is best known of doing simple and easy to use stuff. And I’m counting on that.

  27. Santosh says:

OK ok pleople, There is really really no big difference between G+ and FB. Circle, sparks and hangout are the privacy setting, bookmarks and skype/google chat respectively, put together in a different way. Just another social networking site trying hard without any original idea!!

  28. Alex says:

Sure Google+ has some features that are left out but you have to keep in mind that it is still in “field testing” which is essentially Beta testing so they are looking for improvements and they are listening to their users and doing what they can to make their experience better.

  29. Nick says:

G+ absolutely stands a chance of dethroning facebook. More than a chance, in fact. Unlike “nice in concept” social networking startups like Diaspora, G+ has the powerful branding might of Google behind it. Facebook has been making forays into mainstream internet services, but so far it’s going to be an uphill battle for it to make itself into anything more than a social networking provider.

On a personal level, recent changes to facebook are pissing me the hell off. Besides the annoying and invasive apps and ads that are steadily overtaking the user experience, the fb chat feature (my main reason for sticking with facebook) has basically been neutered.

G+ has a nice, clean design and its chat feature is frigging incredible (watch youtube videos with friends? group chat with up to 10 people? text chat sidebar?)…incredible enough for me to make the switch and encourage my friends to do the same alone.

My prediction is that unless FB drastically steps up its game in the near future, G+ will sweep in and sweep out FB’s users in much the same way FB killed MySpace. Also, college-age kids will lead the charge just as in the FB vs. MySpace battle.

    My vote goes with Google+!

    Google+ vs Facebook!

Both of the organizations are leader in their fields.. Facebook can never provide the facilities, which google provides… Google is big, and has better network than Facebook.

But Facebook is a lifestyle.. Most of the facebook users use to check their accounts just after they wake up.. They share, they comment, they chat.. they do everything what they cant do in real life..

Google attempted to capture the social network market before.. but they failed. Orkut has better security (you can send scrap to selected users, you can share your pics with selected users) than Facebook.. bt orkut failed. Google buzz, google wave.. all failed (i did not use both of these, even i dont know their URLs). Why??

Just one answer, why they should?? they are engaged with a number of groups, connected with a number of friends in facebook.. its really difficult to move all the friends and groups (even pages) to another social networking site..

Google+ is new, cool and has new features, bt it’s hard to defeat facebook.

I am tired of other ppls dum status I mean who cares who is dating who and thw worst of all: tired of friends who post every 15 mns they are mad, angry, sad, crying or about to commit suicide over a break up and also tired of even looking at my news feed full with a lot of video links of dum videos of music that I am not a bit interested in but yet they think we all love their dum music with google+ I will just keep my frinds in circles and talk about our common interests n mot be bother with other peoples dum comments!! Love you Google+

ist instant messenger, then myspace then facebook then ??

  34. WE will watch & see. Sounds like its gunna be good. How hard will it be or a pain will it be to move all facebook activity to google. most people will not want to use both, be lazy and stay with whats working..?? again, I like the sound of it

  35. Facebook is a moment in time. Its meteroric rise could be extinguished just as quickly if it does not watch its proverbial back. Its not one system versus another. Google is an infant in social networking, but infants grow quickly. The best and brightest minds are now working to defeat the others systems. As an individual referee my bet is on Google. 38. Vijith Nair says:

Its a good article. Though it seems google plus will take much longer time to capture the social networking market. But definitely google+ will dominate facebook in near future.

  39. Mike says:

I personally use facebook currently and I’m not impressed, I took one tour of Google plus and I would jump ship so fast it would make your head spin. If your worried about friends then just invite them over, and if they are worried about change then stay with the senior citizens on facebook (they seem to not like change). I just wonder how long it would be before I would see the mobile version? Hopefully they are writing that at the same time.

  40. mark says:

It appears so far that G+ (I’ve only been using it for a few hours) works like a grouped twitter. There is little personalization. I say this knowing full well that FB is completely devoid of personalization if you compare to MySpace which you could personalize like crazy.

Myspace still is a great app for listening to bands that you have don’t know much about, but so is last.fm and Pandora. Facebook never caught up with myspace in that realm, but they did give us the ability to throw livestock at each other. Let’s hope G+ doesn’t punish us with that.

  41. Alan says:

    whatever google does, I follow

  42. AG says:

I think google + will do good facebook will just fall just like myspace it was a trend till something new came along, and google + is the new thing and after all google can do now it will have a social network it will have everything then. Now all google+ will have to do is make apps for the iphone etc.. all smart phones! So we will see once its up and running for all!

  43. Romadhon says:

I think Google and Facebook different. Facebook more user friendly but Google plus looked more techie. :D thnaks

  44. Lee Bryant says:

I personally have fb, twitter, and othe networking area’s over the internet
and to say that google+ will be a great addition, will help in many ways
    like it…

  45. James says:

currently i would pick google+ over facebook because the ads have made facebook dead to me

  46. Robo says:

Well, I found out today about G+ from a tv show “Tosh.O” on the Comedy Channel.
All I can say is time will tell if G+ works or fades away.
I’ll wait and see just how many companies will have a page on G+, as right now a lot of companies, music bands, governments, etc., out there that have a FB page that you can “like” up on. If businesses recognize G+ and start having their pages there like FB, then G+ has possibilities.

It reminds me of the BluRay and HD-DVD war, who will win.. I always said BluRay and a friend of mine was HD-DVD. HD-DVD was better in technical specs over BluRay, but we all know who won in the end.
    I’ve heard scientists have developed a 10 layer BluRay disc, that’s a 250GB disc.
But in the end, BluRay will fade away like the VCR tapes, and USB will take over. Mind you by that time, it’ll probably be USB 5.0.
Have you noticed that LED TVs are starting to outsell LCD TVs? Plasma TVs are useless unless you don’t play video games or watch any tv channels that DON’T have their stupid icon on the bottom right of the screen… Sorry, I digressed.. I won’t bother with G+, for now.

  47. sanit says:

plus has good possibility but do u think that fb will just sit and see ?

  48. saint says:

and it is horrible to view in mobile..

  49. sriram says:

nicely explained…hope facebook will slap g+…

  50. john says:

    its clueless…
    who will win this competition…
Few friends started moving to G+ from facebook…
And they are saying its looks good especially hangout…

  51. Marcus Deal says:

I remember when AIM was really the first social network on the web that had real success. Everyone I knew had AIM and the chatting was awesome. I was heartbroken when Myspace started taking over. Their chat system was absolutely horrible as well as facebooks. I preferred myspace over facebook because myspace was more unique and at one point really tied music in with their system which is awesome. Facebook was just more clean and less fussy which combined with status updates really took people away. Make no mistake facebook has nothing over google. Google + is finally going to combine everything together. Of all the social networks I’ve always despised facebook the most. I will be happy to see its fall. Everyone who disagrees is sadly a little slow in the head.

  52. Nick says:

Google+ has gotten a lot of attention lately…so that when it does come out, everyone will rush to it and it will either bomb or skyrocket in a short amount of time.

  53. NEW SOCIAL says:

OK, ENOUGH ABOUT GOOGLE + AND FACEBOOK…THERE IS SOMETHING COMING AND IT WILL CRUSH BOTH SITES, HOW DO I KNOW…BECAUSE I AM THE OWNER…MANY PEOPLE BELIVE FACEBOOK CANT BE BEAT..WRONG I HAVE ALREADY BEATEN IT…THE SITE WILL BE LAUNCHED IN A FEW DAYS AND WHEN IT HITS YOU WILL KNOW…YOU ALL WILL REMEMBER THIS POST…GOOGLE AND FACEBOOK…U HAD A NICE RUN…BUT ITS OVER…MY SOCIAL SITE WILL TAKE U DOWN…..

  54. Anon says:

All you’ll get is a bunch of googlefags who only go to the social network/say it’s better because it’s “Google”.

Also your review is VERY bias. You mention far more pros for google than cons. It being new also comes with A LOT of shitty changes from Facebook. Who has been here much longer. I will not leave FB simply because google is attempting to be a complete fag and take over everything. I will try it however.

    • Josh says:

LOL, Anon. I wonder why there are more pros than cons! Probably because it’s better than Facebook!
I got rid of my Facebook account a while ago, and now I can’t wait to try out GooglePlus. I hope it OWNS Facebook.
Let the war begin, and I just hope I get an invite.

  55. I heard about this new social network thru 92.3 hot jams(radio station) Rick Dee’ s in the morning especially on a Friday…. Even though u have a bad day … Its going to be a good day cuz its TGIF….. Mmuuaahh!

  56. ashlobash says:

only a fool will think facebook is good

  57. ConCon says:

Who cares if Google+ takes down Facebook or not. Im sure that is not their business strategy. They know they are not going to take the entire Facebook userbase, even so, most likely the majority of everyone who has a google+ account also has a facebook. Google really doesn’t need google+ to be bigger than facebook, they are a bigger company than facebook already. Google will win its users because time and time again they deliver practical, sleek, functional, gorgeous, and best of all, always free apps for their users. Everyone knows that facebook was at its best when the user base was smaller and it had a level of exclusivity. People have short attention spans and eventually they will grow tired of the same old facebook and they will want something new.

  58. CS says:

“Google+ does not have annoying applications like facebook (may be yet)”??

Do you really think this is a plus over facebook?

I agree some applications are annoying, but thats what keeps people hanging around in the social network.

  59. Buchanan says:

Facebook is a big social networking site. A good percentage of people and business already registered in Facebook and have developed a strong connectivity. Google plus is new and it will be a bit difficult task to compete with Facebook

  60. sinbad says:

I’m still waiting on an anti-social network to develop, then I’m all in….

  61. AD says:

What disturbs me about the whole question of Google Plus vs. Facebook is that it wouldn’t even be a question worth asking if not for concerns that have everything to do with marketers and the bottom line and nothing to do with the people who use the tools, nothing to do with building and maintaining a free culture. And I don’t mean free as in free beer. I mean free in the sense Larry Lessig invokes. Kinda scary that THE most useful information tool on the ‘Net, one that has contributed to innovation and creativity more than all others combined, could be taken out (or transformed into something less than it currently is) by the social media craze. Years from now, we might marvel at how Internet searches were once free and open to anyone with access to the network. If that happens, how coudl we not trace it back to this type of competition? The trend I see developing is one where only “registered” consumers have access and then only in so much as they will continue to consume, producers be damned. The overall number of producers dwindles, keeping profit margins high for those already producing, while severely limiting new-comers. Not the recipe for a vibrant, highly creative society.

  62. justsayitloud says:

Wonder why it seems so hard to see for some people: In the next step Google will personalize the answer to yr searches “things when we need them” by the preferences / searches of your social network, someday leading to a world where I just get ads for the products I was just about to search for and the top product in the top position…. and where will FB go?

  63. ibrahim says:

Google+ is nothing new. What’s new about streams? And google sparks is more like a netvibes clone. silly hype.

  64. Rania says:

Great information, thanks for posting! I doubt google+ will be a facebook killer but facebook truly has paved the way for a competitor to waltz right in because of ‘controversies over privacy issues, frequent changes to user interfaces and increasing commercialization’.

  65. New to Social Media says:

The new chat feature of Facebook is not at all good. Its very confusing. With the coming of Google+ Facebook will definitely be affected but the roots of Facebook in social network is very strong. In the field of marketing its only the unique features and regular updation is what is required. Facebook keeps its user engaged with a hew feature added every time. Lets hope Google+ comes sup with something more interesting

  66. Deniz says:

Well, everything which was/is made by Google is great. And the most of the people know this. So I think G+ will grow slowly, but will grow. There are many fanboys out there and I think they will try to convince their friends to “get” G+. Hell, Facebook has to be stopped, it’s really going on my nerves. Really -.-”

  67. andriani says:

At google plus there are not excists spams..
Also the google plus was made from google..so the comopetition i9s tough.

  68. blahhhhh says:

People say it can’t take over facebook, but thats what happened with myspace when facebook launced, its the internet, no matter how big of a website is, something better is bound to come along.

  69. Devils-advocate says:

‘Have you heard of Bebo? yeah, I didnt think so.’ there goes ONE pathetic social networking site.
Thats what people will be saying about Facebook in a few years.
‘Facebook forever!’ then the kid comes home beaten up and the father says, ‘what happened to you?!’ then kid replies, ‘I tried to revive facebook’ the father grounds the kid. :p

  70. Google+ is definitely my favorite when it comes to social networks. It’s so much better than horrible Facebook. So glad I now have a better option.

  71. seomaster440 says:

Promoting google+ votes is becoming a very hot business. Using these types of services could have negative or positive affects on SEO.
We just have to see how google treats them. Another place to buy google plus votes is bulkones.com
Will be interesting to see how this evolves over the next few months.

  72. prasanth says:

Great information, thanks for posting! I doubt google+ will be a facebook killer but facebook truly has paved the way for a competitor to waltz right in because of ‘controversies over privacy issues, frequent changes to user interfaces and increasing commercialization

  73. Patrick says:

Honestly, I don’t understand why people say “Google plus is so clean.” “There’s not so many statuses that are annoying.” “It’s just simple.”

Ok, cool story. Facebook started like that. Then it got big. Same thing will happen to Google plus… if it ever gets there.

Myspace and Facebook was a different battle at a different time. Facebook has millions of more users, a lot more hours spent on it, and it’s a lot more connected then Myspace ever was. Dozens of social networking sites have tried to dethrown Facebook, and they failed. Facebook is now one of the most downloaded apps on every phone, there are now phones and other devices that come with a freakin Facebook button on the phone. So for example, you have your talk button, you got your end call button, and there’s the Facebook button. Facebook is being integrated into almost every type of electronic device. Cameras, phones, computers, mp3 players, game consoles, etc.

Myspace had many musicians using it. Now Facebook has that, but in addition, it has schools, employers, companies, parents, etc.

In the end. Facebook hasn’t even reached his peak. Give me a break with this Google plus garbage. Two years from now, all of the Google fanboys will be advertising another social networking platform hoping that it will dethrown Facebook.

You fanyboys better pray that Anonymous does what they promised.

  74. Archi says:

All I can say is that, Google Rocks!!! I will not be surprise if Google+ take over the social networking market… These guys really now what they are doing!!

  75. Something better always comes along. FB and Google+ are to busy playing cat and mouse and on who could build the better mouse trap. Yet, what they’re both lacking is, they don’t pay attention to the needs of their members.

  76. Elie says:

I must be honest, I do not have a preference.I have been using facebook since 2008 and I got google plus invite and it looks ok, what is missing is all my friends there and most importantly contact information. I know there was a time when we would exchange e-mails nowadays facebook is sufficient to know that you can reach anyone and you can find anyone given they have a facebook account. For me it is like an address book.

If google plus can miraculously get all my friends transferred and all the information I will move to google plus.

All I can say is that I do not have time for another social media.

  77. Dave says:

All I know is that I have been ignoring all these new web fads for many years now. For the majority of them I wait for them to go away. I have never had a Facebook, my space, twitter, or any other social networking account since I viewed them as a waist of time. Just nothing that I am interested in doing. Why write every detail of my life online. No one is that interesting and I will not “Like” any company for a freebie no matter how many time my wife tells me to create an account. Now the strange thing is I have been sucked into having a Google+ account; so they must be doing something right with their initial marketing. I just would like it to do more than personal life broadcast and enter the world of productivity. Maybe take LinkedIn and join it with WebEx for a social productive work environment.

  78. Thomas says:

I love google + so much more than Facebook and I haven’t even used it much yet, You can reply to notifications without even opening up a new tab or altering the 1 in view, it’s simple to find pages of interest via suggestions and all You have to do is drag them into the circles of Your choice, when looking at the news feed/stream You can choose which circles you want to see, so You don’t have a big mix of friends, family and artitst etc… Google have probably been planning this for a good few years, they have huge experience with the internet and how people like to use it and where they spend their time. There are problems on Facebook nearly every week/day due to the amount of changes and updates, I’m sure google know how to update/change things without affecting its users activity, I dont remember ever having a problem with google, and I doubt they’ll plaster it with advertisements, TBH I haven’t noticed any yet, why would they put advertisements up?? Google + is an advertisement, an advertisement for google, they make plenty money from the browser, so why bother with the hassle of advertising third party companies when they can use all the free space on the page for extra features! and it is certain that the more popular this becomes, the more powerful the browser will become. Not to mention the fact that Facebook is a site that is found in most cases using google! and most people that use Facebook are looking for an alternative.. well the alternative shall be right in their face everytime Facebook fecks up in the future! And also using google chat You can compose a message of any size without being told ehhhh :p sorry :p chat message too big You can send a personal message instead :p And lol zynga have also said that they are putting people that don’t buy game credits and cards etc.. on a nonpreferred list or something, OMG they sure couldn’t have picked a worse time to speak o.O

  79. MUX says:

what many people fail to take into account is that Google+ has the support and thus the advertising arsenal of google/youtube/ebay etc. and so if they wanted to google could flood sites with links and tantalising marketing about this “NEW” thing.

  80. ashley miller says:

facebook is the biggest thing to happen sense landing on the moon. it destroyed myspace & no one is even going to look twice at this google plus thing. facebook > google plus. face it, its better, always will be. stop trying to compare.

  81. Daymon says:

I don’t know what the average age of the commenters are here, but I’m old enough to remember when Google was new, and competing with the likes of MSN, and Yahoo! search, which were huge back in those days. Google didn’t have the deep pockets back then that they have now. They were determined, and creative. They absolutely have the creative edge over Facebook, in addition to the experience derived from it’s past to be head and shoulders above Facebook. Though funding can’t hurt, I don’t think that is what will put G+ at the head of the pack in the social networking game. I think Google simply being Google, and going back to it’s roots will be the ultimate game changer.

  82. RezA says:

    Thanks alot

  83. GK says:

    You Guys,
there is a very good book “the google story” read it unlike facebook google is made on pure Customer Satisfaction. they dont step on someones shoulder to climb up they make the stairs so that every one can come up with them that includes facebook if it wants it can rise up with google. They dont really care as long as facebook(feeling threatened) provides the users with what is needed(like circles & ease of use)they have shut down many similar projects they will shut this down too if people dont want it ( but we all know what happened to HOTMAIL? none gave GBs of space before google started it). Lastly, there is a difference b/w visionaries and copycats if you’ve seen “the social network” you can easily say that MZ copied stuff from other sites(Myspace hi5 etc. you can see in the movie when he draws on the white board) and integrated into one site – Facebook. Google’s work is some thing which is actually new – Google+.

  84. fda says:

I like google more than facebook!!! btw, I never liked FB..

  85. Michaelen says:

You cannot compare Google+ vs Facebook and Facebook vs Myspace. When Myspace was a big hit, social networks did not have structure.Mark Zuckerberg and his team created a well developed social ecosystem. Today, Facebook is impregnated into our minds, I´m not saying Google doesn´t have a chance but believe me, I work at merchandising and Facebook is here to stay. It may not be forever but its not disappearing right now, Google has some catching up to do, for several years.

  86. kayellen says:

Everyone has an opinion.. At first it was Myspace that was “THE” place for social networking… Millions of people used it…then got fed up… seems to be the same thing going on over on facebook.

Facebook is great and all but remember nothing lasts forever..Myspace is a prime example…people slowly began migrating away from it once Facebook gave them another outlet.. The same thing can happen to Facebook..it isn’t the “End all-Be all” of social networking, it is jsut the most popular for now. Like any Hollywood Star, it’s shine can fade with one too many screw ups.

If Google+ can give me more privacy and still allow me to enjoy interaction with other users, I will absolutely make the move and drag as many friends as I can with me.

  87. Arshid says:

I think facebook is better.Google + don’t have a good mobile version and so many falts behind .So facebook is better.

  88. k1998 says:

google plus is sooooo much better than dumb facebook

  89. aggie says:

Google Plus is so much better than facebook but right now facebook has the teen population covered and google plus is not allowing anyone under18. Once they allow those people their site will have much more traffic. Google Plus is the silent killer of facebook.

    • AmazedHuman says:

Wait a minute….Google + doesn’t allow anyone under 18??? You do know, don’t you, that a whole lot of people who use FaceBook do so in order to keep in touch with grandchildren. That could be a deal breaking for the massive change over that’s about due to begin from FaceBook. Google + needs to quickly change that rule!

  90. Steve says:

or… google could just buy out facebook and be done with it :P

  91. Tim says:

Like mega giant My-space they were at the time thy elite for social networking, problems they ran into were advertising to much like face book is getting into it…they will fall just as My-space did just his year. As for the greed of money is driving them to the poor house in the long run…how many different type’s of social networking companies out there are willing to battle it out….lock and load Google + give them a run for the money over there on Face book, you rule the search engine world, now is time you rule the social networking programs !!!!

  92. JB says:

well my last status on facebook was “will be using google+ from now on, so just join if you want to keep in contact” the comment was removed in just seconds, I wasn’t asking people to leave facebook but to just join google+ if they wanted to stay in contact with me. This is a clear example that facebook fear google+ if they delete a person with only two hundred friends comment(I then proceeded to delete my account, denying me freedom of speech, c*nts.)

  93. AmazedHuman says:

Tell you what…I’m up to here with FaceBook. This latest round of anti-privacy things they’re foisting on FaceBook users has put me over the top. I’m deleting it and getting out. Now if GooglePlus doesn’t follow suit and throw everything you read, watch, listen to out there for the entire world to see, I think they are going to see some mammoth growth very shortly. FaceBook has become way to invasive!

  94. Saeed says:

Developing a website is not a hard work for google, but when it fails puts the company in danger.
Hey google , be aware of total company failiure. remember the orkut and buzz.

  98. I am using both, and i love them both equally. They are so far the best communication, marketing and social tools out there! Just take it easy, and stop questioning what is better. It’s the same as asking yourself what is better Lambo or Ferrari

  99. Chris says:

I see Google+ replacing Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin for old duffers like me (43 yr old business manager). I really couldn’t see the point in facebook but I already think G+ is a simple piece of genius and where appropriate I’ve sent out stream postings to my small business’s management “circle” rather than use general e-mail.

The automatic running of youtube playlists when you search a singer, the access to other parts of google (finance, docs etc) and being easily able to see your profile as other’s do are all very encouraging.

But how do I switch off the side-bar ads for games and other nonsense?
