Interesting post, I hope this will lead to further posts about this topic.

I have a question : how do advertising companies get the page rank and visitor counts, except from Alexa?
I know that Alexa can give some details about the top 100,000 websites on the net, are those datas being used by companies when they give a quotation for placing ads on a website?

Also you can have very detailed numbers on Analytics, but this is not accessible to extern people.

Page rank can be checked by using page rank checkers and tools.
    For instance,
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/321
This firefox addon will show the page rank and alexa rank of the website you visit.
Visitor counts can be counted only by the administrators/owners of the website, using scripts or using tools like “google analytics” which give very detailed information and statistics.
Of course, the websites demand the price to place the ads based on page rank and alexa rank.
Alexa ranks all available websites on the internet except the ones which have no visitors at all, and alexa gives some more traffic details for the websites which are in the top 100,000

    Thank you for you answer!

But how were companies doing the traffic checking before Alexa existed?
Or maybe this was not existing before, since Alexa was created in 1996 and I suggest they have been the pioneers in traffic monitoring.

    Can you confirm?

ALEXA – Address Lookup Experts Authority was formed in 1996 before that there were no proper traffic ranking system was available, and the Internet was not that sophisticated during that time. We can say that no traffic systems were available before Alexa…

Yeah just as I thought :)
And except Alexa and Analytics, what solution do companies have?

  6. nivethan says:

Yahoo! Web Analytics is also a nice one.
